Today it Came to Me...Clinton like Bush
have heard over and over again by Hillary Clinton and her loyal supporters and spokespeople that her remaining in this Democratic race is “good for the country” or "healthy for the party.” I have always rejected that perspective, particularly considering that this is simply a race for the Democratic nominee, not the ultimate contest for president. There is a Republican out there waiting in the wings for the Democrat who survives.
And then today I heard something as I was listening to the news that rung a major bell in my head, and the parallel is quite clear to me. The ABC radio news was talking about Joe Andrew, an Indiana Democratic leader who came out this morning and switched his allegiance to Barack Obama. He announced that his Superdelegate vote will go to Obama and explained in a superb and very thoughtful article why. Although it’s lengthy, it is a very worthwhile read. Every Democratic voter in Indiana should read this article. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/5/1/102837/5934/498/506979
Do you remember the Supreme Court case called Bush v Gore? Well, I sure do. It was the case in 2000 that George W. Bush was pursuing to stop the counting of votes in Florida. The theory being that if several counties in Florida reviewed ballots cast and counted the votes that were not registered the first time through, Al Gore would overtake George W. Bush and become the winner of the Florida electoral votes, thus the presidency.
The Supreme Court, as we know, ruled in Bush’s favor, essentially stating that allowing the State of Florida to count all the votes would be harmful to George W. Bush. Duh!! Of course hundreds if not thousands of votes died on that day.
So it dawned on me today that this is exactly the same argument that the Clintons and their followers are making. They have been claiming that keeping her in the race is good for America, even though my grandchildren at this point realize that she is behind in the delegate count, states won, popular vote and tasteful clothing (editorial comment). The reality is that keeping Hillary Clinton in this race is good for Hillary Clinton. It is not a benefit or special gift to this country. Just like handing the presidency to George W. Bush, as the Supreme Court did, it was not a bit helpful to this country.
I’d love to hear this coming out of people’s mouths in the coming days. I find the parallel very compelling. Also, please take a moment to look at Joe Andrew’s article from earlier today. His words are powerful and quite illuminating.
